Singapore Tourist Guide | Meet Dan!
Welcome to a new episode of "Meet your Singapore tour guide " This is the latest blog of our series to introduce you to the people who take you on Singapore day tours. If you book your Singapore tours, chances are your tour guide might be Dan. Dan moved to Singapore many years ago for work and decided to stay! Making Singapore his home, he is full of fun facts and fascinating information that will make you feel how much Dan loves "his" Lion City. If you book a Singapore tour, with him you are sure to be in for a treat and will definitely make the most of your time here! Let's see what Dan had to say in our short interview:** What is your favourite Singlish word?--> As a Westerner, I often get surprised looks when I speak Singlish. The words I most often use are “Tahan” and “Mafan”. “Tahan” means able to withstand and I might use it when showing off that I can eat spice with my local friends. When we take that first bite of a very spicy Mala Hot Pot you might see me look across the table and ask, “Can tahan or not?” as a bit of a friendly challenge. “Mafun” means troublesome. I use it in place of “pain in the [backside]” and I feel a bit more refined. "What is your favourite makan (food) place?--> Old Airport Road hawker centre is my favourite makan place because there are many options to choose from it never gets old! My favourite foods to eat there are fried beef hor fun, popiah, and carrot cake. **Don’t we all love a good popiah? Delicious!!! **Do you have a favourite place in Singapore?--> Again, it's hard to choose just one. For nightspots during the week, I enjoy Al Capone's at Far East Shopping Centre. It's on the luxurious Orchard Road, but it is one of the most reasonable places to have a drink and enjoy live music. They mostly play old rock blues during the week. Another favourite of mine is Going Om on Haji Lane. It is a more chilled out vibe with low-lit lanterns and live music with a Lo-Fi vibe. For an outing in the day, there are many beautiful, lesser-known parks such as the Toa Payoh Town Park that are perfect for a picnic with family and friends. ** Tell us the funniest thing that happened to you during a tour.--> So many funny things happen on tours it's hard to choose just one. I really enjoy a clever joke and sometimes tourists are very witty. A chef was on a food tour with me and as I pointed out the old Jewish Quarter from the edge of Little India, he asked if there were any kosher delis there. I explained where he could find a good kosher deli, but it wasn't in this particular area and he quickly quipped as we walked back into the heart of Little India, "I guess there wouldn't be old delis in New Delhi." ** We definitely look forward to more of those funny incidents with you!
